LOS ANGELES — Mayor Karen Bass joined representatives from Sony Pictures and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, along with leaders from several city departments, for a tour of the Cinerama Dome aimed at accelerating the landmark theater’s restoration and reopening.
Officials participating in the tour represented the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Department of City Planning, Department of Building and Safety, Los Angeles Fire Department and Board of Public Works. The Cinerama Dome is designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
Mayor Bass said the city is working with developers and entertainment industry leaders to resolve permitting and construction issues and move the restoration toward completion. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez said reopening the theater would benefit the surrounding community, the entertainment industry and Hollywood’s economic recovery.
Los Angeles has introduced several measures to support local film and television production. These include reducing filming fees at Griffith Observatory by 70%, reopening the Central Library to filming, shortening the review period for filming applications at the Port of Los Angeles and simplifying certain street closure and permitting procedures.
The city also appointed Board of Public Works President Steve Kang as the Mayor’s liaison to the film and television industry. The position is intended to help production companies resolve day-to-day issues with city departments. An Entertainment Industry Council and regular interdepartmental meetings have also been established to improve coordination with the industry.
The city has not announced a specific reopening date for the Cinerama Dome.
