LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Police Officer Daniel Flores has been charged with 16 felony counts for allegedly recording confidential conversations involving fellow officers without their consent.

Prosecutors said Flores was assigned in 2024 to a unit that conducted background investigations of LAPD job candidates. He allegedly recorded colleagues responsible for determining which applicants could be hired. Some of the conversations reportedly included sexist, homophobic and racist remarks.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office emphasized that California generally requires the consent of all parties before a confidential conversation may be recorded. Officials said potentially improper workplace remarks should be addressed through lawful reporting channels.

Flores is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 10 in Los Angeles. If convicted as charged, he faces up to 13 years in state prison.

The LAPD Internal Affairs Division is continuing to investigate the case. The charges are allegations, and Flores is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
