IRVINE, Calif. — A 20-year-old Irvine man died Tuesday after an officer-involved shooting following a prolonged mental health crisis response, according to the Irvine Police Department (IPD).
Police said they received a call at approximately 11:45 a.m. from a man on Evening Breeze who reported he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was outside his home armed with a knife.
Members of the department's Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) located the man near Sungate and Silkwood and negotiated with him for more than an hour in an effort to secure a peaceful surrender.
During the incident, personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and Irvine's Community Alternative Response and Engagement Team (I-CARE) remained on scene to provide medical and mental health assistance if needed.
According to police, after more than an hour of negotiations, the man suddenly charged toward officers while holding the knife, prompting an officer-involved shooting.
Officers immediately provided life-saving measures before the man was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The man's identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
The Irvine Police Department and the Orange County District Attorney's Office are jointly investigating the incident.
