Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) announced a strategic partnership with artificial intelligence company Anthropic on Wednesday, including plans to invest up to $5 billion in the Claude developer over time.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450-series GPUs using AMD’s Helios rack-scale systems. The first gigawatt of computing capacity is expected to be deployed during the first half of next year.

Originally a unit of electrical power, the gigawatt has become a widely used measure of capacity for large-scale AI data center projects.

“We are very excited to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale,” AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su said in a statement.

AMD has emerged as one of the major beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom. Its GPUs are used to train AI models and run large-scale computing workloads, placing the company in direct competition with market leader Nvidia.

The chipmaker has also secured agreements with several prominent AI companies, including Anthropic rival OpenAI. Under AMD’s arrangement with OpenAI, the company issued warrants covering up to 160 million AMD common shares, equivalent to approximately 10% of the chipmaker. Vesting is tied to deployment targets and AMD’s share price.

The Anthropic partnership is the latest in a series of infrastructure agreements designed to expand the AI company’s computing capacity. Anthropic said in April that rapidly growing demand for its Claude models and products had placed “unavoidable pressure” on its infrastructure, affecting service reliability and performance—particularly during peak usage periods.
