OpenAI is preparing to launch a new enterprise service called OpenAI Presence, designed to connect AI agents with companies’ internal data, policies, software systems and business processes.

The platform aims to automate parts of customer service, sales and IT support. Potential applications include resolving billing disputes, processing insurance claims and handling employees’ technical support requests.

Presence represents another step in OpenAI’s expansion beyond selling access to AI models and application programming interfaces. By offering a broader platform for deploying and managing AI agents, the company is moving further into the enterprise software market.

The expansion could help OpenAI attract more corporate customers, but it may also place the company in competition with some businesses that use its models to develop their own AI software and services.

Presence will include simulated environments for testing agents, security safeguards, human review processes and AI-powered evaluation tools that assess the quality of agents’ work. After an agent is deployed, OpenAI Codex will be able to diagnose operational problems and recommend improvements.

The service will also incorporate OpenAI’s voice and conversational technologies, allowing businesses to automate more interactions with prospective and existing customers. OpenAI said it has already used the system internally to operate an AI-powered telephone support channel for English-speaking users.

Access to Presence will be approved on a case-by-case basis. Customers will be required to work with OpenAI engineers or authorized partners to deploy the platform.

OpenAI said agents will receive access only to the data and systems necessary to perform assigned tasks. Each company will set its own controls, including what actions agents may take, which decisions require approval and when a case must be transferred to a human employee.

The product comes as competition in the AI model market intensifies. OpenAI faces rivals including Anthropic, Google, xAI, Meta and Mistral. As model performance becomes more comparable and prices continue to decline, customers are increasingly able to switch providers. Presence could help OpenAI build deeper enterprise relationships and reduce its reliance on the increasingly competitive market for standalone AI models.
