Ford Motor Co. is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs from model years 2021 through 2026 in the United States because an engine-compartment wiring harness could become damaged, short-circuit and start a fire.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the wiring harness may lack sufficient protection against abrasion. Movement between the harness and nearby components could wear through its covering and expose internal wires, potentially creating heat, sparks or electrical arcing.

Drivers may notice smoke coming through the air vents or a warning message on the instrument panel before seeing flames on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Ford estimates that about 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect. The company has identified 15 fire incidents that may be related to the wiring harness but is not aware of any associated crashes or injuries.

Ford dealers will install protective sheathing and abrasion tape on the wiring harness free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning August 24. Owners may also enter their vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website to check whether their vehicle is affected. Ford’s recall number is 26S55, while NHTSA’s campaign number is 26V468.
