LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas cellphone repair store owner has been indicted for allegedly arranging a fake armed robbery of his own business and filing fraudulent insurance claims totaling more than $88,000.

According to the indictment, Erwin Lanada owned CPR Cellphone Repair, a Las Vegas store that repaired and sold cellphones and other electronic devices.

Prosecutors allege that in October 2023, Lanada arranged for co-defendant Marco Antonio Capistran to rob the store and provided him with a revolver to use during the staged robbery.

Lanada later allegedly submitted fraudulent insurance claims for property damage and lost business income purportedly caused by the robbery. In December 2023, the insurance company issued checks totaling approximately $88,611.23.

Lanada is charged with two counts of mail fraud. Each count carries a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison. His jury trial is scheduled for October 19, 2026.

The FBI investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel R. Schiess.
