Ontario International Airport Unveils Next-Generation Passenger Screening System

Expanded security checkpoints improve screening capacity and efficiency as ONT continues decade-long growth

ONTARIO, Calif. — July 27, 2026 — Passengers departing from Ontario International Airport (ONT) can now enjoy a faster and more streamlined security screening experience following the opening of an expanded checkpoint area in Terminal 2. A similar upgrade is expected to open soon in Terminal 4.

The multiyear project represents one of the most significant improvements to ONT’s passenger screening process since the airport returned to local control nearly a decade ago. The expanded checkpoint incorporates next-generation security and passenger-guidance technology designed to increase screening capacity, improve passenger flow and enhance airport safety.

Since returning to local control in November 2016, ONT’s annual passenger volume has grown from approximately 4.3 million to more than 7 million, making it one of the fastest-growing commercial airports in the United States. The expanded screening facilities will help the airport accommodate continued passenger growth while maintaining the convenient and efficient service for which ONT is known.

“Ontario International Airport’s return to local control gave us the ability to plan for the long term—not only to meet today’s needs, but also to invest in the future,” said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority Board of Commissioners and vice mayor of the City of Ontario.

“This project reflects that long-term vision. As more travelers choose ONT, we are committed to providing them with one of the safest, most convenient and most efficient airport experiences in the country,” Wapner said.

The Terminal 2 modernization project added two passenger screening lanes, significantly increasing checkpoint capacity during peak travel periods. To create additional space, the secure exit lane was relocated to the west side of the existing checkpoint, improving passenger circulation throughout the terminal. The new exit lane is also equipped with advanced technology to enhance security and operational efficiency.

Improvements planned for Terminal 4 include one additional screening lane and a new secure exit lane similar to the one installed in Terminal 2.

The upgraded checkpoint areas integrate several advanced security and passenger-guidance systems, including enhanced monitoring equipment, new credential-authentication technology, upgraded closed-circuit television systems and digital information displays. Together, these improvements will help travelers move through security and terminal exit areas more quickly and smoothly.
